Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been in good form in England. Before making a comeback on India's tour of Zimbabwe, Sundar made an impressive Royal London Cup (List A) for Lancashire.
With ball in hand, the off-spinner did not take many wickets but controlled the game by not letting Yorkshire batters score boundaries In his quota of 10 overs, he conceded 35 runs. Also, he took the wicket of lower order batter Dom Bess. His economical bowling helped Lancashire restrict Yorkshire to 224 in 48.3 overs.
Later, while chasing 225, Sundar walked out to bat in the 30th over after third wicket fell. He shared an unbeaten 51-run partnership with Steven Croft. He remained unbeaten for 30 off 38 deliveries and hit four boundaries. Lancashire won their campaign opener by seven wickets with nine overs to spare.
After Lancashire’s comprehensive win, Sundar was seen dancing in the dressing room. When a teammate tried to record him dancing, he attempted to snatch the phone but could not.
Last month, Sundar made his County debut for Lancashire as well. He picked up a five-wicket haul on debut against Northamptonshire followed by three wickets against Kent.
Sundar will be seen in action again for Lancashire on August 7. However, he is unlikely to stay for the latter stages of the tournament as India play Zimbabwe in the three ODI series from August 18-20.
The 22-year-old made his last international appearance against West Indies in February 2022. He would have made a comeback earlier against the Proteas but contracted Covid-19 before boarding the plane to South Africa.
Sundar was one of the top contenders as spin all-rounders for T20 World Cup but injury led to him getting left behind in the race.
So far, he has played 31 T20Is and picked up 25 wickets. His economy rate of 7.24 is impressive for the format. However, he is yet to prove his mettle with the bat in the format.
