South Africa left-arm pacer Nandre Burger sustained a hamstring injury during the second ODI of the three-match series against India. After having bowled six overs in his spell, Burger stepped up to bowl another. However, he lost his run-up twice and looked to struggle to land on his right leg. He failed to complete the over and soon walked off the field.
Burger to miss next ODI?
According to a report by ESPNcricinfo, Burger has sustained an injury in his right hamstring and this could see him not being able to participate in the third and final ODI of the series that will be held on December 6 in Visakhapatnam. Notably, the 30-year-old isn't a part of the Proteas' squad for the five-match T20I series against the Men in Blue.
With Burger taken off the field, Aiden Markram had to step up and bowl 5.5 overs. This massively affected South Africa's strategy during the game as Burger could have proved to be economical in his remaining overs unlike Markram who gave away 48 runs in his short spell.
South Africa's injury woes
The injury to Burger only adds to South Africa's injury woes as they are already missing pacers Kagiso Rabada and Gerald Coetzee for the series. They have chosen to go with a total of six seam options for the series and it remains to be seen if they will be able to deliver against the Indian batters.
Meanwhile, Burger has a long list of injuries that includes a lower back stress fracture. This kept him out of action from October 2024 until September this year. He also missed the SA20 last season, but was still signed by the Joburg Super Kings for the upcoming season. However, this latest setback may end up ruining his chances to play in the T20 league in the upcoming season as well.
South Africa's squad for T20I series: Aiden Markram, Ottneil Baartman, Corbin Bosch, Dewald Brevis, Quinton de Kock, Tony de Zorzi, Donovan Ferreira, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, George Linde, Kwena Maphaka, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Nortje, Tristan Stubbs.
