Shubman Gill got injured in the first Test against South Africa

India Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill who has been ruled out of the second Test match against South Africa, which is scheduled to start from November 22 at ACA Stadium in Guwahati, will also likely to miss the three-match ODI series against the same opponent, which will start from November 30. However, Gill has travelled to Guwahati alongside Team India. 

Why Gill will miss ODIs against South Africa

Sources close to the development told Sports Tak that he might also miss ODIs vs South Africa as a precaution and rest. Notably, the star batter is playing continuous cricket since being appointed as Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in Tests during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in England.

How did Shubman Gill get injured?

Gill suffered a serious neck spasm during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, which caused him to retire hurt on Day 2 after facing only three deliveries. The injury, sustained after playing a sweep shot, forced him to be taken to the hospital for observation, where he was diagnosed with a neck spasm and discharged a day later.

Who will lead India in ODIs if Shubman Gill misses out?

The BCCI appointed Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma's sucessor to lead India in ODIs before the Australia series, and the Indian Cricket Board had appointed Shreyas Iyer as his deputy. If Iyer is fit to feature before the South Africa ODI series, then he will lead the side. Otherwise, experienced batter KL Rahul or Axar Patel might be seen leading India in the ODIs against South Africa. 

Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah to miss ODIs against South Africa

India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah and star all-rounder Hardik Pandya will also miss the ODI series against South Africa. Hardik, who last donned the India jersey during the Asia Cup 2025 clash against Sri Lanka, is currently on the road to recovery and will feature for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025 to prove his fitness. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah will miss the series to manage the workload.
