India skipper Shubman Gill was taken off the field after facing just three deliveries against South Africa on Day 2 of the first Test at Eden Gardens. After hitting a boundary through a sweep, Gill felt discomfort on his neck as soon as he returned to his natural stance.He was seen holding his neck and looked to be in quite a bit of pain. Physios came onto the field and soon after, Gill was taken off due to a suspected neck sprain and was replaced by Rishabh Pant at the crease.
BCCI later confirmed that Gill had suffered a neck spasm and is being monitored by the medical team. His participation in the match will depend on his progress and a decision regarding it is expected to be taken later in the day.
South African bowlers impress
Meanwhile, South African bowlers helped their side in getting back into the game on Day 2. After India had gotten off to a steady start thanks to the duo of KL Rahul and Washington Sundar, forming a robust 57-run stand, however spinner Simon Harmer got the big breakthrough and dismissed the latter for 27. Soon after, Rahul would go on to lose his wicket to Keshav Maharaj for 39.
Pant, who had taken the crease after Gill walked off, looked to be in good touch at first, but failed to score big and got dismissed for 27 runs by Corbin Bosch. This wicket fell just minutes before the conclusion of the first session and saw the Men in Blue get restricted to 132/4 at one stage.
Indian bowlers bundle out SA for low total
Earlier, India had bowled out South Africa for just 159 runs on the first day of the match. Jasprit Bumrah was the star performer, recording figures of 5/27 with both Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picking up two scalps each. In reply, the Men in Blue had lost Yashasvi Jaiswal cheaply for 12 runs before the duo of Rahul and Sundar ensured that the side didn't lose any more wickets for the day and finished on 37/1.
