Mohammed Siraj to Axar Patel: Notable omissions from India's ODI squad for South Africa series

India vs South Africa ODI series is scheduled to start from November 30.

KL Rahul will lead India in ODI series against South Africa.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have announced India's ODI squad against South Africa for the three-match series, where they made a lot of changes, including the captaincy. The Indian Cricket Board handed over ODI captaincy to KL Rahul as regular skipper Shubman Gill missed out. Apart from Shubman, Iyer, who was his deputy during their last ODI assignment in Australia also unable to make a cut in the squad as he is currently on the road to recovery from a rib injury that get got in Australia while fielding during the third ODI at Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney. 

Apart from Iyer and Gill, the Indian cricket Board has made more changes, where a lot of players missed their spot in the squad. Here are some of the notable omissions from India's ODI squad against South Africa. 

Mohammed Siraj

India's experienced speedster Mohammed Siraj, who was part of the team's last ODI assignment against  Australia, has been omitted from the ODI squad against South Africa. The star speedster has had a poor outing in Australia, where he picked up just two wickets in three ODIs, conceding 54 runs.


Axar Patel

The star all-rounder's name was also missing from the ODI squad against South Africa despite a good performance in India's last ODI assignment against Australia. He picked up three wickets and scored 75 runs in the three-match series, which is the most after Rohit Sharma.

Varun Chakravarty

India's star spinner is currently in the form of his life. He played a crucial role for India in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Chakravarthy picked up nine wickets in three outings as the Rohit Sharma-led side defeated New Zealand in the final to lift their second consecutive ICC title after the ODI World Cup 2023 heartbreak. 

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya, who is currently on the road to recovery from an injury he got during the Asia Cup 2025, has also missed a spot in the ODI squad. As per reports, Hardik will first prove his match fitness for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and the Mumbai Indians skipper will then play the T20I series against South Africa and New Zealand. After finishing the ODIs and Tests, South Africa will play a five-match T20I series against India, which will start from December 9.
