Former India captain Rohit Sharma is known for his on-field humour, and fans often enjoy listening to his stump mic moments during matches. Afghanistan star Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has played plenty of cricket in India, recently recalled one such memorable incident involving Rohit.
Gurbaz recalled a funny chat with Rohit
During Afghanistan’s tour of India for a three-match T20I series in 2024, Rohit, making a comeback to prepare for the T20 World Cup after a long break from the format, had a tough start. He got out for ducks in the first two matches. By the third game, he had finally found some rhythm, but as he walked off the field, Gurbaz, part of the Afghanistan squad, remembered Rohit jokingly saying, “I’ve already been out for zero in the first two matches, and now you want to get me out with a false appeal?” In the exclusive chat with Sports Tak, Gurbaz lauded Rohit's behaviour with the opposition team.
"Rohit is very funny. Whenever I meet him, we joke around. We were playing a series against India. He was out for zero in the first two matches. Then, when he came in for the third match, I appealed for a wide. He abused me. He said, 'I've already been out for zero in the first two matches, and now you want to get me out by making a false appeal in the third match. Rohit Sharma likes to talk to the opposing team's players. He does this often, but it's all in jest. He's funny" Gurbaz exclusively told Sports Tak.
Gurbaz on India's ODI captaincy transition
Team India is currently going through a transition period, and the management’s recent decision to appoint Shubman Gill as Rohit Sharma’s successor to lead the side in ODIs has raised some eyebrows, even though the 38-year-old Rohit guided India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 victory. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who considers India his second home, chose not to comment on the decision.
"I don't want to comment on this. As cricketers, we consider India our second country. Gill is doing well and captaining well. I don't want to comment on his captaincy. If he's leading the team in the IPL, he can captain. He has a bright future." Gill needs to be supported. Fans and players alike need to support him" added Gurbaz.
