Shubman Gill will be leading India in the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa that will begin from November 14. The 25-year-old has been in fine form in the format ever since he was handed the captaincy earlier this year before the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England. He now stands just 54 runs away from breaking a massive record that is currently held by Sunil Gavaskar.
In the 13 innings that Gill has so far played as India's captain in Tests, he has scored a total of 946 runs. If he manages to score 54 runs more, then he will become the fastest Indian player to reach 1000 runs as Test captain. Gavaskar currently holds the record as he had taken 15 innings to reach the 1000-run mark in Tests as captain.
Gill eyeing 2 more records
Not just this, there are two other records that Gill can break in India's upcoming Test series against South Africa. The 25-year-old already has five centuries under his belt in 2025 and if he goes on to reach triple figures once more, then he will break Virat Kohli's record of most hundreds for India as Test captain in a calendar year, Notably, Kohli had scored five Test centuries each in both 2017 and 2018 as the skipper.
Gill can equal Tendulkar
Finally, Gill is two centuries away from equalling the legendary Sachin Tendulkar's record for most Test tons for India in a calendar year. The latter had scored seven centuries in the format back in 2010 and has held the record ever since. Though this record will be quite hard to shatter, Gill does have the potential to beat it especially looking at the form he has been in as of recent.
Gill had scored four centuries against England in the five-match Test series and then hit another in the series against West Indies. He currently has a total of 2839 runs under his belt from 39 Tests, including 10 centuries and 8 half-centuries. He currently boasts a blistering average of 43.01 and will be looking to maintain his red-hot form when he comes up against the South African bowling attack.
