India’s star pacer Mohammed Siraj is excited for the two-Test series at home against reigning World Test Championship (WTC) champions South Africa. After a defeat in their WTC 2025-27 campaign opener, South Africa were able to draw the series 1-1 on Pakistan soil. But, Siraj is happy with team’s form and his rhythm, ready to face the Proteas challenge.
“This series is crucial for the new WTC cycle, especially since South Africa is the defending champion. While they drew 1-1 with Pakistan, we're confident from our own good form, we created a positive environment, performed well in England, and won against the West Indies. Personally, I'm bowling with good rhythm and looking to make the most of it. Facing strong teams helps identify areas to improve, and I'm really excited for this challenge," Siraj said while speaking on JioStar’s ‘Follow The Blues’.
Siraj’s recent form
Siraj claimed 10 wickets in the Test series against West Indies. He took a four-fer in opening Test in Ahmedabad. After his ODI return on Australia tour, Siraj returned to play second unofficial Test against South Africa A where he claimed three wickets.
Will Siraj get help from Eden Gardens pitch?
While he had an injury and South Africa A chased down 417, Siraj is likely to get help from Eden Gardens track which isn't a rank-turner. Also, reverse swing will come in handy at the venue.
Siraj has played four Tests against South Africa and taken 12 wickets at an average of 24.16, including a six-fer. He will look to improve his Test record in the upcoming series.
Ganguly on Test series opener in Kolkata
Meanwhile, former India captain Sourav Ganguly is expecting a high-quality contest between the two sides.
“The first Test starts in Kolkata in a few days, and it’s going to be a tough tour for South Africa. Playing against India in India is never easy. India is a very strong side in the subcontinent, and they are a strong team even overseas these days. I’m really looking forward to the Test at Eden Gardens. South Africa is a good side, so it should be a high-quality contest,” Ganguly said.
India-South Africa Test head-to-head in Kolkata
The two teams have won three Tests at the venue. In 1996, South Africa beat India by a huge margin of 329 runs. In the last two Tests at Eden Gardens against South Africa, India have registered comprehensive wins. The last clash was in 2010 when India beat South Africa by an innings and 57 runs.
