Jamie Smith's unbeaten 72 coupled with Harry Brook's fifty helped England end Day 2 at 259/6.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith played a crucial role in pushing England to a 23-run first-innings lead over Sri Lanka in the opening Test. His unbeaten 72 helped England reach 259/6 before play was prematurely ended due to weather conditions on Day 2 at Old Trafford on August 22.

In response to Sri Lanka's 236 all out, England also received valuable contributions from Harry Brook (56) and Joe Root (42). However, rain interruptions washed out the morning session and led to an early finish with more than an hour of play remaining after tea.

Jamie Smith's resilient 72 helps England stay strong on Day 2

Jamie Smith, playing in his fourth Test match after being appointed England's new wicketkeeper for the summer, has continued his impressive form. He scored 95 and 70 during England's 3-0 series win over the West Indies last month and now has another Test half-century to his name. With five fours and one six to his credit, Smith was at the crease with Gus Atkinson (4 not out) at the close of play. Despite England's lead, Sri Lanka remains in the match, which is perhaps more than they could have expected after struggling to 6-3 after seven overs on Day 1. The Sri Lankan bowlers fought hard to keep England in check, with seam bowler Asitha Fernando claiming figures of 3-68.

Due to persistent rain, no play was possible before an early lunch was called at 12:30 p.m. local time (1130 GMT). The match resumed 45 minutes later.

England resumed their innings on 22-0, but Sri Lanka quickly struck, overturning two lbw decisions in three balls. Dan Lawrence successfully reviewed an lbw call to stay in, but Ben Duckett was dismissed for 18 after Sri Lanka successfully challenged an lbw decision against him.

England's stand-in captain, Ollie Pope, was bowled by Asitha Fernando two overs later. Dan Lawrence edged behind off Vishwa Fernando for 30, and Joe Root was also dismissed by Asitha Fernando. Harry Brook and Jamie Smith formed a crucial partnership of 62 runs to steady England's innings. Brook reached his 13th half-century in 15 Tests, showcasing his continued strong form in the format. Smith, who has also adapted well to Test cricket, helped England surpass Sri Lanka's total after tea.
