South Africa is not being "too loud" about their chances of making it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final, according to Temba Bavuma. With victories in five of nine games, the Proteas advanced to second place in the standings on Saturday, November 30, with a point percentage of 59.26.
Temba Bavuma on WTC Final chances
Bavuma and company took a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after defeating Sri Lanka by 233 runs in the first Test at the Kingsmead in Durban. Instead of pondering over outside influences, the skipper stated that the Proteas only want to concentrate on what they can control.
"The conversation [about WTC] has been there, we are not too loud about it. It will come. Our focus needs to be more internally, what we have been doing as a team and control that, let whatever happens happen,” Bavuma said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Bavuma says SA were in tough spot
After being knocked out for 191 in their opening innings against Sri Lanka, South Africa was in serious trouble. However, they did not turn around when they knocked the visitors out for 42 thanks to Marco Jansen's five-wicket haul. Following the twin hundreds that Tristan Stubbs and Bavuma later scored, the bowlers returned to the celebration.
“Tough cricket out there, quite happy with the result. We were in a tough position, knew we had to dig deep. We spoke about getting in a comfortable position and were able to do so. Got a good partnership in the first innings and that helped,” Bavuma added.
With four consecutive victories, the Proteas are in a strong position to take the top spot in the WTC standings. Australia fell to third place in the table as a result of their victory in Durban.
