India is set to face Australia in 5 Tests

Rohit Sharma likely to miss the first Test.

There is only one captain of the Indian side, Aaron Finch said in response to Sunil Gavaskar's suggestion that if Rohit Sharma is unable to play the first Test, Jasprit Bumrah should be named captain for the duration of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Rohit might not play in the opening match of the five-Test series in Perth on November 22 as reports suggest that his wife Ritika Sajdeh is expecting their second child. There is no official statement yet on Rohit's unavailability for the first Test following India's 0–3 thumping of New Zealand.

Gavaskar on Rohit missing 1st Test

Gavaskar recommended that Ajit Agarkar, the chairman of the BCCI's selectors, let Rohit know well in advance that India cannot afford to start the series without its captain. Since switching captaincy during a high-profile series is not ideal, he feels that Bumrah should be given complete leadership responsibility for all five Test matches if needed. Former Australia captain Finch, on the other hand, "absolutely" disagrees with Gavaskar and believes Rohit is the team's sole leader.

Finch disagrees with Gavaskar's request

"I disagree with Sunny on that totally. Rohit Sharma is the captain of the Indian cricket team. If you need to stay at home because your wife's going to have a baby… that's such a beautiful moment… and you take all the time that you need in that regard," Finch said on Around the Wicket podcast.

Rohit is in a similar situation Like Virat Kohli from the last tour. After the first Test in Adelaide, the former captain of India took a plane home and missed the rest of the series. He and Anushka Sharma became parents to a girl, Vamika. In Rohit's situation, things are a little different because he will return for the next four Test matches and take over the captaincy from Bumrah who will lead in Perth. As the team's vice-captain, Bumrah is the most likely candidate.
