Mushfiqur Rahim's century put Bangladesh on verge of winning second Test against Pakistan

Pakistan now need 437 runs to win second Test

Bangladesh firmly asserted their dominance on the third day in Sylhet, leaving Pakistan with a massive uphill task after a disciplined and determined second-innings performance. The bedrock of this clinical display was built around Mushfiqur Rahim's commanding 14th Test century. By the close of play on Day 3, the visitors were set a mountainous target of 437 runs to level the series.

Mushfiqur's ton places Bangladesh on comfortable position to win 2nd Test vs Pakistan

Mushfiqur's masterful knock of 137 was defined by his trademark composure and authority. Pakistan had actually started the day on a positive note, with Khurram Shahzad troubling Najmul Hossain Shanto before trapping him leg-before-wicket for 15, which left the hosts in a spot of bother at 115 for 4. In response to the pressure, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter prioritized patience over aggression, playing close to his body, turning down risky deliveries, and biding his time for the game to open up.

Once he settled in, Mushfiqur unleashed an array of elegant cover drives and crisp square-cuts, occasionally punctuated by authoritative slog-sweeps and hard drives through the line that illustrated the futility of Pakistan's full-pitched bowling. He anchored the innings for 233 balls, hitting 12 boundaries and a six, and was the final Bangladeshi wicket to fall in the 103rd over. His dismissal brought Bangladesh's second-innings total to 390, securing an overall lead of 436 through what was arguably one of his most influential Test hundreds.

Mushfiqur found an excellent partner in Litton Das, who carried his fluent form from a first-innings century straight into a challenging morning session. Litton's sharp half-century marked the third time he has scored a hundred and a fifty in the same Test match, a new record for a Bangladeshi wicketkeeper, surpassing Mushfiqur himself. Though he timed the ball beautifully despite the seam movement, Litton benefited from a stroke of luck when Babar Azam missed a direct hit from short midwicket with the batsman stranded halfway down the pitch. He ultimately compiled a brisk 69 off 92 balls before an upper-cut off Hasan Ali traveled straight to Saud Shakeel at fly-slip.

Mushfiqur-Litton's partnership puts Pakistan on backfoot

The pivotal 123-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Mushfiqur and Litton effectively extinguished Pakistan's hopes of clawing their way back into the contest. While Khurram Shahzad later returned to clean-bowl Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 19 with a sharp, jagging delivery, and spinner Sajid Khan claimed a couple of late wickets to wrap up the tail, the damage had already been done. Despite Sajid also enduring a tough day that included dropping Litton on 56 off his own bowling, Pakistan faces a grueling battle ahead.

Taijul Islam provided valuable resistance from the lower order, offering solid support to Mushfiqur Rahim with a gritty 22 off 51 balls. Together, the pair stitched together a crucial 77-run partnership for the seventh wicket, with Taijul executing two handsomely struck boundaries. The most memorable moment of their alliance, however, came right after a heated exchange between Mushfiqur and Pakistan captain Shan Masood, when Mushfiqur emphatically answered back by lifting one foot off the ground to pull Khurram Shahzad to the fence. It was yet another mini-battle that Bangladesh won, mirroring their dominance throughout most of the Test match.

Faced with a mountainous target, Pakistan now confronts a near-impossible rescue mission. While the batting conditions have not deteriorated drastically, the visitors will need a historic, unprecedented performance to overhaul Bangladesh's massive lead against an incredibly inspired and disciplined bowling attack.
