The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has requested the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to change the venue of meeting which is scheduled to take place in Dhaka. The BCCI is awaiting reply from the ACC to take further course of action.
"We have requested them (ACC) to either change the meeting venue or postpone it. But, till now, there is no update from them. We will wait till 24th (July) which is the date of meeting," a top source told Sports Tak.
India are hosts of the tournament. Amidst tensions between India and Pakistan, the latter's matches will take place at a neutral venue.
"We have not decided anything. At present, we are just awaiting their decision on Asia Cup meeting. Once there's clarity on the meeting, we will decide the further course of action," the source added.
The ACC meeting is scheduled to take place on July 24 in Bangladesh's capital city. Earlier, a source told Sports Tak that there will be no BCCI representation in the meeting. In addition, other boards are likely to boycott the meeting as well.
"Boards like BCCI, Sri Lanka (Sri Lanka Cricket), Oman (Oman Cricket) and Afghanistan (Afghanistan Cricket Board) have decided to boycott the meeting. If Mohsin Naqvi goes ahead with the meeting in Dhaka, then whatever decision taken will become null and void as per the constitution of ACC," the source had said.
Sources had also said that the ACC Chief Mohsin Naqvi is trying to create unnecessary pressure on India for Asia Cup which is tentatively scheduled for September.
Defending champions of Asia Cup
Asia Cup is considered a dress rehearsal for the World Cup. It will be played in the T20 format since the next year's World Cup is the same format as well.
The last edition of Asia Cup was played in 50-over format. In Asia Cup 2023, India beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets, as the hosts were bowled out for a paltry 54 in Colombo. The last time Asia Cup was played in the T20 format, Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by 23 runs to win the trophy.
