While the upcoming Indian Test squad selection is unlikely to feature any major surprises, a serious conversation is brewing regarding Rishabh Pant's future as the vice-captain in the red-ball format. When the national selectors convene in Guwahati on May 19 to finalise both the Test and ODI squads for the series against Afghanistan, the leadership hierarchy is expected to be a major talking point.
Rishabh Pant expected to lose India's vice-captaincy in Tests
As per a PTI report, there is a growing consensus among decision-makers that the burden of a leadership role may be negatively impacting the 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batter's naturally flamboyant game. This sentiment has gained traction following his two-season captaincy stint with the Lucknow Super Giants, which many feel has provided clear testimony that leadership might be affecting his overall performance.

The upcoming assignment against Afghanistan will kick off with a one-off Test match scheduled from June 6 to 10 in New Chandigarh. Following the longest format, the action will shift to a three-match ODI series, with games slated for June 14 in Dharamshala, June 17 in Lucknow, and the finale on June 20 in Chennai. Star batter Shubman Gill is widely expected to handle the captaincy duties for both the Test and ODI squads.
Jasprit Bumrah's workload management on focus
The focus of the selection meeting will also center around the careful workload management of India's premier fast bowlers—most notably spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, following a highly demanding IPL season. Because the standalone Test against Afghanistan does not offer points toward the World Test Championship cycle, there has been considerable speculation that selectors might use the opportunity to rest a few senior players.
While no cricketer has formally requested a break from the upcoming series as of yet, conversations regarding player fatigue are guaranteed to feature prominently during the deliberations. The team management and selectors will look to strike a delicate balance between fielding a competitive side and safeguarding their core players for the packed international calendar ahead.
