Chief selector Ajit Agarkar's contract has been extended till June 2026 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Since his appointment as chairman of men's selection committee, India have reached the final of ODI World Cup 2023, won the T20 World Cup 2024 ending the ICC trophy drought, followed by the ICC Champions Trophy triumph earlier this year.
“Under his tenure the Indian team had won titles and had seen transition (of the Tests and T20) too. The BCCI had extended his contract till June 2026 and he had accepted the offer a few months back,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.
As per the report, the contract was renewed a few months back, before the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
During his tenure, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is. Then, Ravichandran Ashwin followed by Rohit and Kohli retired from Test formats as well.
Suryakumar Yadav was named T20I captain whereas Shubman Gill led the team in Tests. Suryakumar will now lead India in T20 Asia Cup 2025, his first major tournament as T20I captain. Gill proved his mettle in debut Test series, drawing it 2-2 on England soil and scoring 754 runs.
Probable changes in selection committee next month
The men's selection committee includes Agarkar, SS Das, Subroto Banerjee, Ajay Ratra and S Sharath. The report also suggests that at the annual general body meeting in September, some changes can be made in the committee. Sharath is likely to be replaced with a new face. After the meeting, the BCCI will call for applications for the selector post. There is a question mark over whether Das and Banerjee will remain in the selection committee.
Changes in women’s selection committee too
Changes will also be made in senior women and junior men selection committees. The senior women selection committee comprising of Neetu David, Arati Vaidya and Mithu Mukherjee have completed five years. As per the rules and regulations of the board, a member can keep his/her post for five years. The BCCI will invite applications for women's selection committee as well.
