Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi recently addressed the topic of Jay Shah's election as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman. Naqvi emphasized that the PCB has no concerns regarding Shah's appointment to this prestigious role.
At the end of last month, Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the ICC Chairman, following the decision by the incumbent chair, Greg Barclay, not to seek a third term. Shah was the sole candidate nominated for the position, and his election reflects a strong consensus within the cricketing community.
Jay Shah is the youngest ICC president, he also joins the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar as Indians who have led the ICC in the past.
Pakistan are the current host of the Champions Trophy 2025 and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to decide whether to send team India to the neighbouring nation for the marquee event. Earlier, Pakistan were the host of Asia Cup 2023 where BCCI decided not to send team India for the marquee event and after that, the tournament was played in a hybrid model. India-centric matches were hosted by Sri Lanka.
Naqvi said that Pakistan will host the Champions Trophy and the PCB are currently in touch with BCCI and other boards who will participate in the tournament.
“Champions Trophy will be held in Pakistan, we are in touch with the BCCI Secretary. [We are] also in contact with the boards of the teams participating in the Champions Trophy," Naqvi said.
"We are in touch with Jay Shah; there are no concerns about his becoming ICC Chairman. The ACC meeting is on September 8 and 9," Naqvi told reporters, as quoted from Geo News.
Naqvi went on to confirm that he won't be present in the meeting and said, "I will not be able to attend the meeting, and Salman Nasir will attend. The meeting will finalise matters related to the new president."
As the marquee event approaches, Pakistan is grappling with inconsistent form and disappointing results. In Jason Gillespie's debut as the Test head coach of Pakistan, the team, led by Shan Masood, has hit a low point, suffering a whitewash at the hands of Bangladesh on home soil.
