The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has revealed England's playing XI for the final ODI of the three-match series against South Africa. With South Africa having already secured the series with a 2-0 lead, this final match is a dead rubber. The host team has made just one change to their lineup, bringing back Jamie Overton. The ECB confirmed that Overton, the well-regarded all-rounder from Surrey and a star for the Chennai Super Kings, will replace Saqib Mahmood.
Overton in, Mahmood out as England's playing XI for 3rd ODI vs SA revealed
Overton will replace Mahmood, which means the team will once again depend on Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, and possibly Joe Root to cover for the fifth bowler's workload. In the previous match, Bethell and Jacks combined for figures of 1 for 112 in just 10 overs.
The team is showing confidence in Ben Duckett, who will remain in the side for the third ODI in Southampton despite being rested from next week's T20Is. Duckett is one of only three players, along with Harry Brook and Jamie Smith, to have played in all 14 of England's home international matches this season. However, his recent form has been a concern; he's only passed 20 once in his last 10 innings since the start of the Hundred, and he scored a scratchy 14 off 33 balls at Lord's after making just 5 in the first ODI at Headingley.
The inclusion of Overton is notable as it marks his first appearance for England since he surprised the team's management by putting his red-ball ambitions on hold.
Notably, the third ODI between England and South Africa will be played on September 9, Sunday. Right after the conclusion of ODI series, both the teams will be locked in a three-match T20I series which will start from September 10
