India captain Rohit Sharma brings back glory to India after Men in Blue defeated South Africa in the final to lift the T20 World Cup 2024 after more than a decade. Earlier, India won the Champions Trophy in 2013 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
Rohit has announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game after guiding India's T20 World Cup win. However, he is currently leading the team in ODI and Tests. Rohit's last outing for India was in the second Test match against Bangladesh in Kanpur where he broke a plethora of records with his batting carnage along with Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Earlier, Indian fans and cricketers faced a heartbreaking loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup final last November. Rohit's team had won 10 out of 10 matches en route to the ODI World Cup final but endured a crushing defeat in Ahmedabad last year.
During the launch of his cricket academy in Rashin, Karjat, in the Ahmednagar district, Rohit was asked by the host whether the audience wanted to see him play in the ODI World Cup 2027, which will be hosted by South Africa, and lead team India as captain. The crowd erupted in cheers, chanting "Rohit, Rohit," showing strong support for his continued leadership. Here is the clip.
"I do not speak Marathi that well but I will try," Rohit told the crowd after taking a short walk on the stage and signing some autographs.
"For us, winning the World Cup was the biggest goal for 3-4 months that we had to win it. After winning the World Cup, I felt alive again," he said.
"We are starting our cricket academy here and I will hope that the next Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah will emerge from here," he added.
Rohit Sharma will now be seen in action in the upcoming Test series against New Zealand and after that he will lead India in Australia for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024.
