In a significant development, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) declared on Tuesday their intentions to host Zimbabwe in a bilateral cricket series, marking the first such endeavour since 2003. The highlight of this cricketing reunion will be a four-day Men's Test slated from 28-31 May 2025. While the precise venue remains under wraps, this decision is a direct outcome of productive dialogues between the ECB and Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) aimed at cementing their ties.
ECB's Chief Executive Officer, Richard Gould, shared his enthusiasm, stating: "We are delighted to be able to host Zimbabwe for a Men's Test match for the first time in two decades. Zimbabwe's contributions to cricket are noteworthy, having introduced to the world-class players and coaches that have enhanced the global stature of the sport."
He further added, "Our resolute commitment to nurturing a strengthened association with Zimbabwe Cricket is manifest in the announcement of this Test. The recent Ashes series illuminated the splendour of Test cricket. However, amidst the rigorous demands of the global cricket calendar, our aspiration remains to expand the horizons of Test cricket, seeking avenues to engage with more cricketing nations."
Echoing this sentiment, Givemore Makoni, ZC's Managing Director, articulated: "The joy and significance of playing bilateral cricket on English soil after a hiatus spanning over two decades are profound. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the ECB for their pledge to rejuvenate the age-old cricketing ties between our nations, a relationship that traces its origins to the 1890s in Zimbabwe."
