England lost their no.1 crown in the ICC's latest ODI rankings after Australia handed them a series sweep in the just concluded three-match One Day Internationals. As a result, England have slipped to the no.2 position in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings and stepped aside giving access to New Zealand to sit on the top of the ranking as the new ICC number one ODI side.
The reigning ICC ODI and T20 World Cup champions have undergone a rollercoaster of euphoria and dismal phase which ranges from winning the T20 World Cup in Australia, and a week later getting swept away in a 3-match ODI loss and losing their number one ODI rank badge.
The World Cup-weary team did not have some of the marquee players from the team playing as they wanted to unwind from the burnout they suffered at the recently concluded T20 World Cup. But the same was not the case for Australia which went gangbusters against England with a full-strength team.
Before this whopping loss of 3-0 to their arch-rivals Australia, England enjoyed the pole position with 119 points which were five points ahead of New Zealand. However, the series loss means that England have bid farewell to the number one rank. New Zealand after England tumbled down the ranking ladder by six points, have become the new ODI number one ranked side.
Australia's sterling efforts earned them a jump up the spot. The Aussies have ascended to the fourth position with 112 points, superseding Pakistan and getting past them, who have 108 points. This means India and Australia are on equal footing with India having more points in total.
India are No.3 with 112 rating points, and 3802 overall points; Australia on No.4 with 112 and 3572 respectively.
England will look to get over this loss and find their mojo again along with the lost tag of the number one ODI side when they face South Africa for a three-match series away from home in January 2023.
