England's revolutionary white-ball captain Eoin Morgan announces international retirement

England's only ODI World Cup-winning captain has announced retirement from international cricket on June 28. Morgan is easily the most successful ODI captains for England with 76 wins from 126 games with a win percentage of 65.25.

England cricket announced the news on Twitter saying, “Morgan You’ve changed English cricket forever. An innovator A motivator A champion Your legacy will live on...”

Achievement as captain

The 35-year-old Irishman was given the responsibility to lead England in 2014 in a bid to bring reforms to the side's white-ball team. Five years later, he led England to their maiden 50-over World Cup win. Earlier, he had guided England to T20 World Cup final in 2016 where they were denied glory by a rampant Carlos Brathwaite.

Slump in form

Of late, Morgan's batting form was under the scanner as he had not registered a single fifty-plus score in previous eight ODI appearances. His last century came against Ireland in February 2020. Morgan had revealed that he would step down as captain if he fails to contribute as a batter.

The 35-year-old recently got injured and missed the last game of the three-ODI series against Netherlands. Earlier, he failed to score in the first two ODIs. The Dublin-born cricketer announced his retirement just ahead of white-ball series against India at home.

Impressive numbers

Morgan will retire as England's highest run-scorer in ODIs of all-time. In 225 ODIs, he scored 6,957 runs at an average of 39.75 including 13 centuries and 42 half-centuries. The southpaw also maintained an impressive strike rate of 93.89.

ECB is yet to announce the new captain in the limited-overs format. It is likely that Ben Stokes will become England's all-format captain.
