Former Indian captain and BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has hit back at critics who questioned his decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as India's captain. In an interview with a Bengali daily, Ganguly defended his choice, made after Virat Kohli stepped down from the role following India's T20 World Cup exit in 2021. Ganguly's appointment of Rohit Sharma came under intense scrutiny following Virat Kohli's explosive press conference, where the former captain claimed he was removed from the ODI captaincy without his consent. However, Ganguly maintained that the decision was made through mutual agreement.

When I handed Rohit Sharma captaincy of Indian team, everyone criticised me: Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly defended his decision to appoint Rohit Sharma as India's captain, highlighting the team's recent T20 World Cup victory. The former Indian captain reminded critics of his role in Rohit's appointment, emphasizing that he was the one who made the decision to elevate Rohit to the captaincy.
"When I handed Rohit Sharma the captaincy of the Indian team, everyone criticised me. Now that India has won the T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, everyone has stopped abusing me for it. In fact, I think everyone has forgotten that it was I who appointed him as the captain of the Indian team," Sourav Ganguly told Ajkaal.
Sourav Ganguly expressed interest in becoming the head coach of the Delhi Capitals following the franchise's decision to part ways with Ricky Ponting. The former Indian captain, currently serving as the team's director of cricket, indicated his desire to take on the coaching role.
"I am planning for the next IPL. I want DC to win this time. I will speak to the management about appointing an Indian as the head coach," Ganguly said.
"I want to give a shot as the head coach. I will bring in some new players. Wanted to bring in Jamie Smith from England. I wanted to test him out in Delhi's SA20 franchise. He wanted to come in but the schedules did not match," the former India captain concluded.
