In 2022, there have been seven different Indian captains across the format. After Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain and Rohit Sharma took over as all-format captain, there have been too many changes in leadership due to packed schedule and injury. The recent series of events has led to the split captaincy argument resurfacing again. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly in an exclusive interview to India Today said that split captaincy “may happen” but “not now”.
“Rohit Sharma is captain of team India in all formats. Split captaincy may happen but not now. Actually, Indian players are playing lot of cricket now due to which injury and breaks will be there. All of us need breaks,” Ganguly said.
The former Indian captain also talked about India’s bench strength that has delivered of late.
“There is an advantage that we can see new players. We won in West Indies despite injury issues. We won in England as well. We have 30 cricketers now who can play for Team India’s first eleven,” Ganguly added.
On being asked about how important India’s Asia Cup opener against Pakistan will be, he said, “I don’t see any match as India vs Pakistan. I see it as a tournament. India vs Pakistan is like another match to me. Indian team is doing well now and I am hopeful they will play their best in the tournament.”
Ganguly also talked about his return to the field in the special match between India Maharajas and World Giants on September 16 which is a part of celebration of India's Independence.
“I don't know what will happen. I wish I can play cover drive like before. I wish I could connect it well. I will play just one game and try to enjoy it,” the 50-year-old said.
“I don't know who will be the tough contenders. Everyone is getting old. All of us are retired so tough in the weakest. I don't know I could connect the ball again or not. Or Send the ball to the gallery stands or not,’ he further added.
