Former Bangladesh batter Faruque Ahmed has replaced Nazmul Hassan as Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president. The board meeting was held in Dhaka on August 21 following Hassan’s resignation.
Faruque joined the BCB directors' meeting after him and Nazmul Abedeen Fahim were nominated as directors in the board by National Sports Council (NSC).
Hassan, who has been serving his fourth term as the chief of Bangladesh's cricket governing body, has been notably absent from public view. Since the onset of political turmoil in the country due to student protests against the recently dissolved Sheikh Hasina government, Hassan and his wife have been in London.
Hassan’s 12-year stint comes to an end
Hassan's resignation marks the end of his 12-year leadership of the BCB. He first served as BCB president in 2012 on the government’s appointment. The transition in leadership at the BCB marks a significant shift as Ahmed takes on the role of president, navigating the organisation through a period of uncertainty both within the cricketing community and the broader national context.
Challenging times ahead for Faruque
Faruque, has previously served as BCB chief selector for two terms: from 2003 to 2007 and from 2013 to 2016. He resigned from his position as chief selector before completing his second term due to his refusal to accept the expansion of the selection panel from three to a larger number of members.
BCB recently suffered a blow as ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, which is set to be held in October, has been moved out of Bangladesh. The tournament will now take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with BCB continuing to host the event.
Faruque’s international career
He made his ODI debut as a 22-year-old against Pakistan. The top-order batter scored his first half-century against India in Chandigarh in December 1990. He scored 57 runs from 126 balls against Mohammad Azharuddin-led India in a losing cause. He was dropped in 1990 and made a return to ODI side after nine years. He was dropped again after two single-digit scores. From seven ODIs, he has scored 105 runs at an average of 15 and a strike rate of 38.46.
