Following Champions Trophy 2025 debacle, Pakistan appoint their third-highest run-scorer in international cricket as new batting coach

Highlights:

PCB revealed they are searching for a new head coach.

Interim head coach Aaqib Javed has been asked to extend his tenure.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on March 4 announced their T20I and ODI squads for New Zealand tour. In the aftermath of early exit from ICC Champions Trophy 2025, batting coach Shahid Aslam has been sacked. Pakistan's third-highest run-scorer across formats in international cricket, Mohammad Yousuf has been appointed as batting coach. 

The press release mentioned that Aaqib Javed will continue as interim head coach. His initial term ended with Champions Trophy 2025. PCB has asked Javed to continue as interim head coach while they search for a new head coach.

50-year-old Yousuf has scored 7,530 runs from 90 Tests and 9,720 runs from 288 ODIs. He has 24 centuries in red-ball format and 15 in the One-Day format.

Naveed Akram Cheema (team manager), Aaqib Javed (interim head coach), Azhar Mahmood (assistant coach), Mohammad Yousuf (batting coach), Mohammad Masroor (fielding coach), Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist), Drikus Saiman (strength and conditioning coach), Talha Butt (analyst), Irtiza Komail (security manager), Dr Wajid Ali Rafai (team doctor), Syed Naeem Ahmad (media and digital manager) and Sergio Basil Mullins (masseur).

Babar, Rizwan dropped

Meanwhile, senior pros Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have been dropped from T20I squad. Agha Salman who captained Pakistan in T20Is on Zimbabwe tour has been appointed captain in the format ahead of T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka. 

Five players -- Shaheen Shah Afridi, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Usman Khan, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain -- have been dropped from the ODI squad. 

The five-T20I series will commence on March 16 at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. Rizwan and Babar will arrive for the ODI series which will begin on March 29 in Napier.
