Australia wicketkeeper Peter Nevill has announced his retirement from professional cricket on April 1 (Friday). Nevill could not play a match since February 2022, due to his shoulder injury. His last international game took place back in 2016.

The 36-year-old Australia wicketkeeper played 17 Test matches and represented his country nine times in the shortest format of the game. Nevill revealed that “It was a frustrating season” for him.

Nevill speaks

“I always knew that I was close to the end of my career. It was a frustrating season for me, I think I’ve missed more games this season due to injury than the rest of my career combined. I’m very proud that I was able to play for Australia, and that I was able to play for such a long time for New South Wales,” Nevill said.

In the longest format of the game, Nevill scored 468 runs at an average of 22.28. He scored three fifties in Test cricket for Australia. He made his Test debut during the Ashes Test series in 2015 at Lord’s. In that Test match, Nevill had replaced Brad Haddin. Notably, Nevill did not play a single ODI match for his country.

Stats and facts

On the other hand, in T20Is, he made his debut against South Africa back in 2016. His nine T20I matches include the 2016 T20 World Cup as well where Australia could not reach the semi-final.

In First-Class cricket, the former wicketkeeper had played in 126 matches and scored 5,927 runs at an average of 36.81. His highest score in this format remains to be 235 (not out). He scored 10 centuries and 33 half centuries in the format.

Nevill feels that he leaves “the game pretty content.”

“I’d like to think that I was able to squeeze as much juice out of my orange as I could. For a bloke with minimal talent and no shots, I leave the game pretty content. I’ve been fortunate to have played for as long as I have. It is hard to condense (my career) into something short and sweet,” the former Aussie wicketkeeper expressed.

Nevill holds the record for the most catches for his state with 310.
