Former South Africa Under-19 World Cup team member assaulted in England, hospitalised

Former South Africa Under-19 World Cup squad member Mondli Khumalo has been hospitalised after getting assaulted outside a pub in Bridgwater, England on the night of May 29. Khumalo is in serious condition after suffering bleeding on the brain, according to a report by ESPNCricinfo. Since then, he has had two operations.


So far, a 27-year-old man has been arrested by the police suspecting assault on the South African bowler who was on his first overseas stint in England. The youngster has been in medically induced coma.


The 20-year-old fast bowler is a contracted player for Kwa-Zulu Natal Inland in South Africa. Currently, he is playing club cricket for North Petherton Cricket Club. He was out celebrating with his club teammates after a win.


Steyn reacts

Reacting to the news, former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn tweeted, "Just read the news about young Mondli Khumalo. I hope you pull through fine brother and I hope his family where in SA are doing okay."


Club’s statement

"All at North Petherton Cricket Club are in shock at the incident in Bridgwater that has led to our much-loved overseas player Mondli Khumalo being hospitalised in Southmead Hospital in Bristol this morning,” North Petherton Cricket Club said in a statement.


"We extend our heartfelt support to Mondli for a full and speedy recovery. Our hearts go out to his family, friends and colleagues in South Africa. Our thanks to those that helped Mondli, especially the health service staff on scene and at hospital," the statement added.


Crowdfunding page

For now, his medical bills are covered as long as he stays in the hospital. In case he needs further treatment, the North Petherton club has started a crowd funding page to come to his financial aid.


Khumalo’s record

Khumalo was a part of South Africa's Under-19 World Cup squad in the 2020 edition. Since then, he has played four First-Class matches, one List A game (50-over cricket) and four T20s. He has 11 First-Class wickets at an average of 25.90.
