The Hambantota High Court has indicted former Sri Lankan off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake for attempting to persuade a fellow player to get involved in match-fixing during the 2020 edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).
Under the recently-introduced corruption law, Senanayake became the first Sri Lankan international cricketer to be indicted.
In 2023, Senanayake was arrested. However, he was released on bail. As per reports from local media, it was Colombo Kings' Tharindu Ratnayake who was under Senanayake's radar to fix LPL matches.
As per a report by Sri Lankan 'Daily Mirror', "Senanayake is also alleged to have contacted two other cricketers participating in the inaugural LPL in 2020 via telephone from Dubai, attempting to persuade them to engage in match-fixing."
Senanayake's international career
40-year-old Senanayake has represented Sri Lanka in one Test, 49 ODIs and 24 T20Is. He made his Test debut in 2014. In white-ball cricket, he made his debut in 2012. He remained wicketless on Test debut against Pakistan. In T20Is, he claimed 25 wickets at an average of 21.96. His economy rate was 6.77 runs per over. In ODIs, he has 53 wickets at an average of 35.35.
Running out Buttler to suspect bowling action
One of the highlights of his career was running out England's Jos Buttler on the non-striker's end in 2014. He played a vital role with four wickets for 13 runs in the ODI where England were bowled out in 2014. Then, he was reported for suspect action. He reworked on his action and made a return to international cricket. But, he could not have a long career in international cricket despite possessing one of the best carrom balls by a spinner. He played in ODI World Cup 2015 and was part of Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup 2014-winning side. His last ODI appearance was in 2015 and T20I in 2016.
Senanayake's KKR stint
In the Indian Premier League's (IPL) 2013 edition, he got nine wickets from eigth games at an average of 23.22. He played just one season for KKR. In IPL 2013, KKR failed to make it into playoffs and finished seventh on the points table.
