Legendary opening batter Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the next Indian head coach is now most likely just a couple more days away. He is reportedly in the final stages of negotiation. Sports Tak understands that Gambhir has also put forward his Kolkata Knight Riders' fellow Abhishek Nayar's name for the coaching support staff member.
Gambhir put forward Abhishek Nayar's name
KKR's batting coach Abhishek Nayar has been with the Knights camp since 2018 and played a crucial role in grooming their youngsters. The most recent example is Angkrish Raghuvanshi, who caught a lot of eyeballs in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He has also been the mentor to the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Shubman Gill. He has also trained Indian captain Rohit Sharma for a couple of years. Gambhir and Nayar worked together during KKR's triumph in IPL 2024 and now the southpaw has suggested his name for his coaching staff in the Indian team. He will most likely take up the role of batting coach surpassing Vikram Rathour or might become Gautam Gambhir's assistant coach.

Why is BCCI delaying new head coach announcement?
According to the reports from Indian Express, BCCI and Gambhir are in their final stages of contract and salary negotiation. The Indian Cricket Board will make the announcement once these discussions are done. Gambhir is likely gonna draw much more salary than the previous office holder Rahul Dravid, whose yearly remuneration was around ₹12 core. When BCCI opened invitations for the head coach position, they made it clear that the salary would be negotiable as per the experience.
However, KKR's mentor does not have any experience of coaching an International or a Ranji side but had some successful stints with IPL franchisees. He was the mentor of LSG for a couple of years and even helped them reach the playoffs. He then returned to the Knights camp and during his one year with KKR, he helped the franchise lift the trophy once again.
