Legendary India cricketer Yuvraj Singh heaped praise on Shubman Gill after the latter led the team to a series draw against England in the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Yuvraj highlighted how Gill brushed aside all the doubts regarding his overseas batting record and played some fabulous knocks throughout the five Tests.
The 25-year-old carried the team in the batting department in the England Tests and finished as the series' highest run-scorer with a total of 754 runs under his name from 10 innings. Gill scored four centuries in the Test assignment including a sensational double-hundred in the second Test at Edgbaston. He undoubtedly played a key role in India pulling off a 2-2 series draw against England
“There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It's just unbelievable that when you're given responsibility, how you take it,” Yuvraj said, speaking to ICC Digital.
“So, very proud of them. I certainly feel it's a win for us, although it's a drawn series, because it's a young team. And it's not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself," he added.
Gill was India's Player of the Series
The 25-year-old was chosen as India’s Player of the Series by England head coach Brendon McCullum for his stunning batting display. This series will definitely give Gill a lot of confidence for future Test assignments and it is safe to say that his era as India's red-ball captain has began on a positive note.
Yuvraj further stated that the Men in Blue's gritty performance throughout the five-match Test series was even more impressive given the absence of seasoned veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The duo had announced their retirements from the format before the commencemnt of the England Tests.
“I think it's just fantastic because I felt when you have a young team going to England, it's a lot of pressure. You're filling the boots of somebody like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, it's not easy. I think the guys took it head-on.” Yuvraj stated.
Meanwhile, India's next red-ball assignment will be a two-match home series against West Indies which is set to commence from October 2. Gill & Co. will definitely be looking to clinch their first Test series victory of the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle with this assignment.
