'Would personally look at managing what he does...' — Ian Bishop wants to help BCCI with Bumrah's injury management

Jasprit Bumrah is no small name in the world of cricket and has taken everybody by surprise since he made his debut. But, since July 2022, India's pace spearhead is sitting on the sidelines international cricket circuit owing to a recurring injury. West Indian legend Ian Bishop recently shared some of his golden advice for the BCCI to help tackle Bumrah's injury woes and bring him back to fitness soon.

A fast bowler himself, Bishop is aware of the issues that a fast bowler has to go through in his career, given the amount of hardwork that they put in to keep themselves fit. However, the Trinidadian cricketer also feels that the workload of a fast bowler should be observed more closely.

"Any fast bowler worth his soul can play all formats of the game all year and maintain his cutting-edge pace, it is just too demanding. The sprint up and down, the hamstring, the workload of the body. It has to be managed," Bishop said.

Bumrah's short run-up with his high arm action helps him generate more pace and his ability to bowl yorkers at will disturb the flow of the batter. Currently, in the eighth year of International cricket, the pacer missed out on some major tournaments due to his injury issues. He has been sidelined since July last year due to a back injury and missed the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup in 2022.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) quickie was set to make a comeback in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season but is now doubtful for the World Test Championship (WTC) final as well. The 55-year-old former West Indian bowler understands that any individual can manipulate their minds and through that, their bodies.

Moreover, Bishop feels that playing senior fast bowlers in each and every tournament is not acceptable and the board should intervene. "I don't think there is any one recipe (to manage workload). Because we don't decide on the minds and bodies of these outstanding athletes. That decision has to be made by the individual and administrators close to him but I will throw one thing out for governing bodies, it is just advice. You can't play these guys (Bumrah and Co.) in every tournament," Bishop added.

The 29-year-old bowler has undergone a successful surgery in New Zealand and is now in a fight against time to make it to the Indian team for the upcoming 2023 World Cup which will be hosted by India. Bishop wants to personally manage what Bumrah does and is eagerly waiting for his comeback.

"I would personally look at managing what he does. Strengthening the core muscles of the body a lot. He is not 21 or 22. When you have done what he has done most of his career, it is hard to make a significant change. You can tweak it in some way shape or form but perhaps that is all he would be able to do. Can't wait for him to come back. Love watching him bowl," Bishop concluded.
