West Indies have been fined five per cent of their match fee for maintaining slow over rate in the first ODI of the three-ODI series against England on May 29 at Edgbaston, Birmingham. West Indies breached the Article 2.22 of the ICC COde of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which retales to minimum over-rate offences.
"Match Referee Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel imposed a five per cent fine on each player’s match fee, after Shai Hope’s team was found to be one over short of the required target at the end of the innings, once time allowances were taken into consideration," the ICC said in a release.
Hope accepted the sanction and there was no need for a formal hearing. On-field Kumar Dharmasena, Martin Sangers, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd levelled the charges.
West Indies bowlers had a tough day at the office. As many as seven batters crossed the 30-run mark whereas four -- Ben Duckett, Joe Root, captain Harry Brook and Jacob Bethell -- scored half-centuries. England posted 400/8 on the board, their highest ODI total against West Indies.
West Indies' most successful bowler was Jayden Seales who took four wickets for 84 runs from nine overs he bowled. Hope bowled only 13 overs of spin even though they were more economical than others. Gudakesh Motie was wicketless but conceded 39 runs. Roston Chase bowled six overs and conceded 41 runs.
Hope's statement after the loss
In the run chase, the visitors suffered a collapse and were bowled out for 162 in the 27th over. They lost the match by 238 runs.
"We didn't get the early inroads that we were after. You play catch up when you don't pick wickets with the new ball. You gotta back your skills. They were striking at 8 at one stage and we let it slip in the back end. We need to do some work. Some assessment needed. More down to the execution. The bowlers can execute at the training. This is international cricket, you need to execute at your best. We always had the quality. 400 is a tough task. We didn't start well with the bat either. We needed a good start to chase down 400," Hope said in the post-match presentation.
Big blow to England
Ahead of the second ODI, England Cricket Board (ECB) announced Jamie Overton has been ruled out of the white-ball series due to a finger injury. Overton took three wickets in the series opener. He has been replaced by Matthew Potts in the playing XI for the second ODI at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff.
