'If I were a selector, would never drop him...': 1983 World Cup winner backs Yashasvi Jaiswal to become an all-format player

Story Highlights:

Madan Lal feels Yashasvi Jaiswal will become an all-format player in the coming future

Jaiswal is a regular in India's Test set-up only as of current

Former India cricketer Madan Lal believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal is good enough to represent the team in all the three formats. This comes after the left-hand batter gave a stellar performance in the two-match Test series against West Indies. The 23-year-old played a magnificent knock of 175 during the second Test and played a big role in the  Men in Blue's seven-wicket victory.

Though Jaiswal is a regular in India's Test set-up as of current, he rarely features for the side in both the ODI and T20I formats. He has so far featured in only one ODI and his last T20I appearance came against Sri Lanka in July, 2024. But, Madan Lal feels that selectors shouldn't drop Jaiswal from any format as he has the ability to win the matches single-handedly for the team.

"If I were a selector, I would never drop Jaiswal from any format. He is a genuine match-winner who has already proven himself in Australia. Whether it is the Asia Cup, an ODI, or a Test match -- a player like him should always be in the XI. When someone can win matches single-handedly, you back him all the way. Jaiswal is the future of Indian cricket. If it were up to me, he would play in all three formats," Madan said on the Cricket Predicta TV Show.

Jaiswal's brilliant record in Tests

Jaiswal is undoubtedly one of the finest opening batters in Test cricket as of current. The left-hander has been in top form on both home and foreign soil. In the 26 Tests that he has played so far, Jaiswal has scored a total of 2428 runs, including seven hundreds and 12 half-centuries. He has a blistering average of 51.65 in the format and will be looking to maintain his red-hot form in India's next Test assignment that will be a two-match series against South Africa and will commence from November 14.

Jaiswal to participate in Australia tour?

Meanwhile, Jaiswal has been selected in India's ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Australia that will begin from October 19. But, there is no guarantee if the 23-year-old will be given a chance in the playing XI. If he does feature in a match in the upcoming assignment, then it will only be his second appearance in an ODI. He had made his debut in the format earlier this year against England.
