Former Australia cricketer Aaron Finch believes that even if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli participate in domestic cricket, it won't change their chances of featuring in the 2027 ODI World Cup. He stated that it will rather come down to the two's desire and determination to play in the mega tournament that is still close to two years away.
Both Rohit and Virat made their long return to Ranji Trophy last season and have once again been advised by multiple former cricketers to play domestic cricket as they are not participating in many games for India. However, Finch feels that domestic cricket won't be of much help for the duo.
"I don't think it necessarily comes down to playing so much domestic cricket. I don't think that would change their chances or the way they approach it at all. The odd game here or there, just to make sure that they're ticking over in a competitive environment," JioStar expert Finch said, while replying to a Hindustan Times query.
"But you know that they're going to be hitting thousands and thousands of balls behind the scenes, away from the cameras. So, yeah, if the desire is still there, and if the performances are there, there's no reason why they won't," he added.
Finch wants the duo to play World Cup
Finch wants the duo to feature in the 2027 World Cup and pointed out how not only would they bring some much-needed experience with them, but will also help the next generation of players and will keep the squad depth strong.
“I would love to see them both play in that 50-over World Cup in 2027. That'll be up to the selectors, the coaching staff, the captain and their performances. That's what it comes down to. I think that any time you have the experience that they bring, but are also pushed by the next generation of players coming through, it's really exciting because it keeps the depth of the squad so strong. And no doubt India have got that,” Finch stated.
"So, what are the challenges that they face? Probably just the amount of cricket. No doubt that will have its challenges. But you know that neither of them will leave any stone unturned. If there's a desire for them to both get there, and they've indicated that, then you know that they're going to be hitting enough balls," he further added.
Rohit and Virat set for returns
Meanwhile, Rohit and Virat are set to make their much-awaited returns to international cricket in the three-match ODI series against Australia that is set to commence from October 19. The duo haven't played an international match since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand and will hoping to make a strong impact in the series against the Baggy Greens.
