India women suffered a 23-run defeat at the hand of South Africa women in fifth T20I

India were restricted for 132/8 while chasing a target of 155/6

India womens' batting faltered again, this time in their pursuit of a modest 156-run target, ultimately falling to a 23-run defeat against South Africa women in the fifth T20I on April 27. With this Proteas to clinch the five-match T20I series with a dominant 4-1 win, leaving the Indian side with big questions to address.

India women flattened by South Africa women in 5th T20I

The foundation for South Africa's win was laid by skipper Laura Wolvaardt, who delivered a sublime, unbeaten 92 to anchor her team. Despite losing partners at regular intervals, Wolvaardt remained in complete control during her 56-ball knock, which featured 11 fours and two sixes. Her ability to finish strong, blasting two sixes off the final two deliveries, was pivotal in pushing South Africa past the 150-run mark after a period of stagnation during the middle overs.

India's batting crumbles under pressure

In response, India’s batting unit crumbled under pressure, managing only 132 for eight. The chase began disastrously as both Shafali Verma (4) and Jemimah Rodrigues (1) were dismissed within the first four overs. Shafali’s attempted sweep off Eliz-Mari Marx found a fielder at fine leg, and Rodrigues was dismissed shortly after while mistiming a pull shot, with Chloe Tryon taking two sharp catches to put the tourists on the back foot early.

With the team reeling at 21 for two, Harmanpreet Kaur and Anushka Sharma attempted to rebuild, but the partnership lacked necessary momentum, adding only 17 runs across 24 balls. As the required run rate began to climb, Anushka was deceived by a well-disguised slower ball from Nadine de Klerk. Skipper Harmanpreet struggled to accelerate throughout her stay, eventually laboring to 22 off 28 balls before being castled by Nonkululeko Mlaba in the 13th over.

Bharti Fulmali provided a brief glimmer of hope with a counter-attacking 40 off 30 balls, but India’s middle-overs stagnation proved insurmountable. South Africa’s bowlers were disciplined throughout, with Mlaba leading the charge with an impressive 2/15, including a maiden over, while de Klerk chipped in with two crucial wickets. Fulmali's dismissal in the 16th over effectively extinguished India’s chances of a comeback.

This series defeat serves as a sobering reality check for the WODI champions, especially with the T20 World Cup only two months away. Persistent issues regarding inconsistency and frequent changes to the playing XI continue to hinder the team’s progress, creating a sense of urgency for the side to find stability ahead of the upcoming global tournament.

Laura Wolvaardt's batting heroics in South Africa's win

Earlier, South Africa, having opted to bat, enjoyed a strong start anchored by captain Laura Wolvaardt. She was in elegant form from the very beginning, taking charge in the opening over bowled by Kranti Goud and maintaining her momentum against the new ball. Her strokeplay was exquisite, featuring a range of shots, including consecutive fours off Renuka Singh that were powered through midwicket and crisply driven through point. Even when India captain Harmanpreet Kaur introduced spin through Shree Charani, Wolvaardt remained unbothered, stepping out to find boundaries and driving past mid-off. By the end of the powerplay, South Africa was in a commanding position at 49 for no loss.

India’s fortunes turned during the middle overs thanks to a disciplined bowling effort from their spin duo, Shree Charani (2/22) and Deepti Sharma (2/37). Charani provided the crucial breakthrough by deceiving Sune Luus in flight, allowing Richa Ghosh to complete a stumping after a brief fumble. The momentum shifted significantly as Charani struck again in her subsequent over, knocking over Tazmin Brits with a fuller delivery. Deepti Sharma then added to the pressure by dismissing Annerie Dercksen for a duck. During this phase, between the ninth and 12th overs, South Africa slipped from 70 for no loss to losing three wickets for just 14 runs, which briefly derailed their innings.

Despite the middle-order collapse, Laura Wolvaardt remained a pillar of stability. As the innings reached the death overs, Renuka Singh managed to stifle the scoring rate, picking up two wickets in the span of three balls as South Africa struggled to break free. However, Wolvaardt held firm and ensured a strong finish. She took on Deepti Sharma in the final over, launching back-to-back sixes to push South Africa beyond the 150-run mark, providing the necessary late flourish to set a competitive target.
