Star batter Shreyas Iyer is reportedly all set to return to India's Test and T20I set up. A report in Times of India suggests that Shreyas Iyer is expected to be named in India's squads for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and a two-match home Test series against West Indies in October.
“We need Iyer’s class and experience in the middle order in all formats. It’s something which we missed in England during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. The selectors are aware that Iyer is an excellent player of spin bowling, which will be crucial in a home season that involves four Tests - two each against West Indies and South Africa,” sources told TOI.
Shreyas Iyer's Test comeback on cards
The 30-year-old's last Test appearance came in February 2024. In the longest format, he has accumulated 811 runs in 24 innings at an average of 36.86, which includes one century and five half-centuries. Although he hasn't scored a fifty in his last seven Tests, his recent domestic form has been outstanding. Playing for Mumbai in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy, Iyer scored 480 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 68.57 and a strike rate of 90.2.
On the other hand, the Mumbai batter's last T20I match for India was at the beginning of 2024. However, Iyer has made a strong case for a comeback with his consistent performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) over the last two seasons. The 30-year-old was instrumental in leading the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their first title in a decade in 2024 and guided the Punjab Kings (PBKS) to the final in 2025, where they were defeated by the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).
Over the last two IPL seasons, Iyer has been in prolific form, scoring 955 runs in 31 innings with an average of 45.48 and a strike rate of 163.5. With the 2026 T20 World Cup being co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, his ability to handle spin bowling and accelerate in the middle overs could prove to be a valuable asset for the Indian team in subcontinental conditions.
As far as Asia Cup 2025 is concerned, which will be played in a T20I format, it will be played from September 9 to 28 in the UAE. The Men in Blue will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, followed by a high-octane clash against Pakistan on September 14. Their final group-stage game is against Oman on September 19. If India finishes in the top two of their group, they will advance to the Super Fours stage, where they will play three more matches. A strong performance in the Super Fours could see them qualify for the final on Sunday, September 28.
