Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma achieved his career-best ICC ODI rankings, moving up to the No. 2 position in the latest ICC Men's ODI Batter Rankings. He went past his batting partner Shubman Gill who previously had the No.2 position to his name. The Indian skipper scored a stellar 157 runs in the recently concluded ODI series which has helped him gain major push in the rankings. Pakistan's Babar Azam still holds the No.1 spot in the rankings. Rohit changed his approach from playing as an anchor for the team to aggressively taking on the bowlers from the first over itself. He has been rewarded for his consistency and change of approach.
The recent ODI series against Sri Lanka also helped Sri Lankan opener Pathum Nissanka climb to 8th place in the rankings. This series was notable for Sri Lanka's historic victory over India, breaking a 27-year win drought since their last triumph in 1997.
Despite India's 0-2 defeat in the series, Rohit Sharma emerged as the highest run-getter of the series. Rohit will now seen in ODI colours in 2025 the recently concluded series was the last ODI series for India in 2024. Rohit gained one point to go at 765 points while Gill who had a dismal show in the series had to lose his spot. The difference between the first and second spots is massive. While Rohit has 765 points Babar is way ahead with 824 points. Others who gained in the recent rankings were Netherlands opener Max O'Dowd who moved up 10 places to 54th, while USA's Monank Patel climbed 11 spots to join the 56th position.
Kuldeep retains number 1 spot
Kuldeep Yadav remains India’s top-ranked ODI bowler as he is placed No.4 in the rankings below Keshav Maharaj, Josh Hazlewood, and Adam Zampa. Kuldeep picked four wickets from three games at an economy rate of 3.40 in the Sri Lanka series. Jasprit Bumrah did not play against Sri Lanka but retained his No.8 slot. Mohammed Siraj, on the other hand, was dropped five places to No.10. Dunith Wellalage picked up a five-wicket haul in the third ODI that helped him to reach No.59 in the rankings. Wellalage also jumped 15 places to No.54 in the ICC rankings for ODI all-rounders.
