India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has flown to England to consult a specialist for sports hernia related injury. Upon consultation, Suryakumar may opt for surgery as well. 

The 33-year-old played in Mumbai's T20 League 2025 where he led the Triumphs Knights MNE who finished sixth on the points table. It is yet to be ascertained whether the pain aggravated during the short T20 tournament or not. 

“Surya is suffering from Sports hernia on right side lower abdomen. He has gone to the UK for consultation. If required, he will be going under the knife,” a source close to the cricketer told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

Surya was Mumbai Indians' (MI) leading run-scorer in the Indian Premier League (IPL). he was second in the race of orange cap. The unorthodox batter scored 717 runs from 16 innings, averaging 65.18. He scored five fifties in the season.

The Indian team is currently in England for a five-Test series to kick-off their World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 campaign. India's next T20I series is on Bangladesh soil before flying to Australia. 

“With no T20 cricket before August-September, Surya thought that this is the best time where he can tend to his injury and also have enough time for recuperation at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru," the BCCI source added.

Suryakumar's T20I captaincy record

Suryakumar was named India's T20I captain till T20 World Cup 2026 after Rohit Sharma retired from the format. Earlier, Suryakumar had led in the absence of Hardik Pandya as well. So far, he has won 18 games as T20I captain from 21 games.

Who will lead India in next T20I series if Suryakumar doesn't regain full fitness? 

All-rounder Axar Patel was named Suryakumar's deputy as Hardik Pandya was not considered for the leadership role due to his struggles with injuries. If Suryakumar doesn't recover in time, Axar may lead in the T20I series against Bangladesh.
