The Mumbai Crime Branch have arrested five people for betting during the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between the Mumbai Indians (MI) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), which took place on Sunday, April 16 at the Wankhede Stadium.
The accused players were using mobile apps and betting during the match. The people were arrested from the Wankhede Stadium. They have seized Rs 10,400, three sim cards, two debit cards, multiple passports, five IPL tickets and a Lucknow-Mumbai flight ticket. The total amount of all the purchases equalled almost Rs 2.20 Lakh.
They have been arrested under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Gambling Act and the IT Act.
Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer's scintillating 51-ball 104 for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was the highlight of the evening but it was not enough to prevent a five-wicket loss at the hands of Mumbai on Sunday's first match.
The accused were using their mobile smartphone to place the illegal bets and also got a SIM card using forged documents, an official said.
It was the 28-year-old's maiden century in the IPL and only the second in the team's history after Brendon McCullum's century for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the opening match of IPL 2008. Venkatesh was the main aggressor for KKR despite the team losing wickets and struggling against the opponent bowlers.
For Mumbai, some impressive power hitting from their top order helped them chase down the target of 180 runs with ease and secure a five-wicket victory.
