Team India's ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who has been suffering from a prolonged back issue, will undergo surgery for the persisting injury in 'a day or two' New Zealand, Sports Tak has learned. The Indian pacer reached New Zealand 'five days ago' after doctors advised him to undergo surgery.
"Jasprit Bumrah left for New Zealand five days ago to undergo back surgery. After doctors advised Bumrah to undergo surgery, BCCI immediately made all the arrangements and sent him. The surgery will be carried out in a day or two," a source told Sports Tak on condition of anonymity.
There will be a massive implication of Bumrah undergoing back surgery, which will force the Indian pacer to stay away from cricket for another '24 weeks'. As a result, the Mumbai Indians pacer is set to miss the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will also remain unavailable for selection for the World Test Championship (WTC) final, if India manages to qualify.
The best-case scenario for India would be to have Bumrah fit by the 2023 ODI World Cup that is scheduled to be played in October-November later in the year.
Bumrah's career in 2022 was marred by a string of injuries. He last featured for India in the T20I series against Australia in September 2023 and missed all the big events from the Asia Cup 2022 and the T20 World Cup 2022 after initially being named in India's T20 World Cup squad.
Earlier, Bumrah had cleared a match simulation test at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru but was under discomfort on the second day after building up to higher workloads in Mumbai.
The 29-year-old Bumrah played only five Tests, five ODIs and as many T20Is in 2022, in addition to the IPL games for Mumbai Indians.
