'He said he was depressed for a month': Jemimah Rodrigues recalls conversation with Rohit Sharma that had her in tears

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has always been considered one of the most talented cricketers the country has ever produced. Even before becoming the captain, Rohit was an indispensable part of the Indian lineup. But there was a time, Rohit had to watch Team India from the sidelines when he was not picked in the ODI World Cup 2011 which MS Dhoni-led side won to end 28-year-old wait.

A dejected Rohit even put out a tweet to show his disappointment. He tweeted on January 31, 2011: “Really really disappointed of not being the part of the WC squad..I need to move on frm here..but honestly it was a big setback..any views!”

12 years later, India women cricket team’s top-order batter Jemimah Rodrigues shared a conversation with Rohit where he revealed that he was depressed for a month after the snub.

"Rohit Sharma was also dropped from the 2011 Word Cup. I asked him the question, '10 years down the line, you are leading India, did you ever think that this would happen?' He (Rohit Sharma) was like 'No, a lot of people came up to me at that time and said a lot of things but nobody knew what I was going through'. There was only one person, Yuvraj Singh, who came up to him (Rohit), took him out for dinner and there was nobody else. He said he was depressed for a month. Because the WC is something that you dream about. So, when he said that, I was crying inside. I was literally in tears," Jemimah Rodrigues said on 'Breakfast With Champions'.

"He said: 'Tough times will happen but you know it is what you do next. Make sure when you get the next opportunity, you are ready for it. It happens (or) doesn't happen it's fine.' And that stuck with me. I don't have to prove to anyone or anything. I just have to play for the pure joy of the game," she added.

Two years later, Rohit had a breakthrough in ODIs as Dhoni promoted him as opener. Rohit was exceptional in 2013 Champions Trophy which India won after beating England. Now, Rohit is 175 runs away from becoming sixth Indian batter to score 10,000 or more runs in ODI cricket.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, Mumbai Indians (MI) won the Indian Premier League (IPL) five times. Next month, Rohit will be leading India in World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 final against Australia.
