'Lot of people who played Test cricket say he is probably the most promising of all youngsters,' Gavaskar talks about this 22-year-old batsman

In the last couple of years, Indian cricket team have given chance to several young talents to showcase their talent for the national team. From the likes of Mohammed Siraj to Washington Sundar and Shardul Thakur, Indian team have seen the rise of multiple young cricketers in recent times. 

 

Now, former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar has praised a young batsman who emerged playing various age-group competitions and that batter is Shubman Gill. The 22-year-old Punjab-born cricketer had emerged as one of the heroes of India’s triumph in Australia. 

 

Gavaskar's words

“Shubman Gill has been somebody I had heard a lot about, particularly after the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. A lot of people who played a lot of Test cricket came to me and said look he is probably the most promising of all youngsters," Gavaskar said during the documentary 'Down Underdogs' premiering on the Sony Sports Network.

 

Gill made his Test debut in the Melbourne Test (second match) against Australia. after India’s tragic 36 all-out in the first Test. Making his debut at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the youngster batted with maturity, scoring 45 runs in the first innings and 35 runs (not out) in the second innings. Later, Gill scored his maiden half-century in the drawn Sydney Test. 

 

However, Gill had kept his best performance in reserve for the last Test. India were chasing a mammoth 328 to win at the Gabba, the 22-year-old batter earned a rock-solid start for the Indian team, scoring 91 runs off 146 balls, a knock which often gets overshadowed by Rishabh Pant’s brilliant 89 not out. Gill's innings was comprised of 8 boundaries and 2 sixes.

 

In ODIs

Gill played his first ever ODI game for India during the 2019 tour of New Zealand and scored only 9 and 7 runs respectively in the first two games. After waiting for one year, in December 2020, Gill played his third ODI and scored 33 runs against Australia in Canberra. In that match the visitors had secured a victory by 13 runs.

 

Gill first emerged in the limelight during the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand. India had won that tournament under the leadership of Prithvi Shaw. Gill scored a sensational hundred against Pakistan in the semi-final.
