India's domestic cricket season is scheduled to commence on June 28 and the first tournament slated to take place is the Duleep Trophy. Several young and established stars of domestic cricket, including those who have had a run with the Indian national cricket team, are gearing up for the competition. The tournament offers a golden opportunity for players to make a mark and put them in contention for selection in the senior men's national team.
One such cricketer who would be desperate to make a mark is Mayank Agarwal. The Karnataka batter has been named as the vice-captain of South Zone and will take the field under the leadership of Hanuma Vihari. Agarwal is a household name in the Indian cricket circuit as the right-handed batter has dominated domestic cricket for years while also enjoying a good amount of success in international cricket with Team India.
The 32-year-old Agarwal has represented India on the international circuit in 21 Test matches and five ODIs. The Karnataka batter, however, fell behind in the pecking order with the rise of batters like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. Agarwal's numbers in red-ball cricket are impressive. He has scored 1,488 runs in 21 matches with the help of four centuries and six fifties. Yet, he last played for India in March 2022.
Agarwal is leaving no stone unturned in order to make a comeback to the Indian side. Ahead of the Duleep Trophy, the right-handed batter shared a video on his Instagram story where he can be spotted undergoing an intense net session in the rain.
Agarwal, who has scored more than 6,800 runs in First Class cricket, would look to carry his form from the Ranji Trophy 2022-23 season into the Duleep Trophy. The right-handed batter was the leading run-scorer in Ranji Trophy last season and finished the competition with 990 runs injust 13 innings.
