Procter's illustrious career was marked by his remarkable achievements both on and off the field.

The cricket world mourns the loss of Mike Procter, a legendary South African all-rounder and the nation's pioneering coach in the post-apartheid era, who passed away at the age of 77. Procter's illustrious career was marked by his remarkable achievements both on and off the field, leaving an indelible mark on the sport. Procter faced significant health issues, undergoing surgery that led to complications and ultimately resulted in his admission to the ICU.

"He suffered a complication during surgery and while in ICU went into cardiac arrest. He became unconscious and unfortunately never woke up," his wife Maryna told South African website News24.

Mike Procter enjoyed a legendary career

Mike Procter, celebrated for his formidable prowess as an all-rounder, amassed 21,936 runs and took 1,417 wickets over 401 first-class matches, a testament to his exceptional skill and dedication to cricket.

During his brief yet impactful international career from 1967 to 1970, Procter donned the South African jersey in seven Test matches, leading his team to victory in six. His bowling talent was eye-catching, as he claimed 41 wickets at an astonishing average of 15.02.

Tragically, Procter's international cricket aspirations were cut short in 1970 due to the international ban imposed on South Africa because of its apartheid policies, a dark period that halted the country's cricketing engagements globally.

A true all-rounder in every sense

Despite this setback, Procter's legacy in first-class and List-A cricket remained undiminished. His tenure with English county Gloucestershire, where he served as captain for five years, highlighted his leadership qualities and on-field brilliance. Procter's batting average of 36.01 and his 48 centuries and 109 half-centuries in first-class cricket showcased his batting prowess.

With the ball, Procter was equally formidable, achieving 1,417 wickets in first-class cricket at an average of 19.53. His record of being the only South African cricketer to score over 500 runs and take 50 wickets in a single domestic season cements his place among cricketing greats.

Mike Procter's coaching career

Procter's contribution to South African cricket extended beyond his playing days. As the national team's coach during the 1992 ODI World Cup, he led the team to the semi-finals, a remarkable achievement for a nation re-entering the international cricket arena. His later roles as an ICC match referee and South Africa's convener of selectors further demonstrated his lifelong commitment to the sport.

Mike Procter's passing is a profound loss for the cricket community, and he leaves behind a legacy that will forever be cherished. His exceptional talent, resilience in the face of adversity, and contributions to cricket both in South Africa and globally will not be forgotten.
