Story Highlights:

Mark Waugh backed Yashasvi Jaiswal to become the next great Test batter

Jaiswal has scored 2511 runs in 28 Tests so far

Former Australia cricketer Mark Waugh believes that instead of Shubman GillYashasvi Jaiswal will be the greatest Test batter from his generation. This comes after the latter has left many impressed with his stellar performances in red-ball cricket. He has scored a total of 2511 runs in 28 Tests so far, including 7 hundreds and 13 half-centuries. He also has a phenomenal average of 49.23 in the format.

Jaiswal is undoubtedly one of the finest talents present in India's current Test set-up and he has showcased that with superb performances not only on home soil, but in overseas conditions as well. He has already scored tons in West Indies, Australia, England and is currently the Men in Blue's highest-ranked Test batter.

Durring a discussion, Waugh mentioned the names of Jaiswal, Harry Brook and Rachin Ravindra when askked to name the next great batter in Test cricket. He eventually picked Jaiswal out of the three to become the greatest of his generation.

“Well, I reckon there’s three in the running. There’s Jaiswal, and there’s (Harry) Brook and (Rachin) Ravindra from New Zealand. I’m going with Jaiswal," Waugh said in a video shared by Kayo Sports on X.

“24 years of age, he’s (Jaiswal) already got a double hundred and averages just under 50. There’s something special about this kid, so I’ve got him down, Jaiswal, as the next champion batsman to join the elite group. Look at him. Brilliant player, so that’s my pick, the young Indian," he added.

Vaughan's take on the matter

Former England captain Michael Vaughan was also a part of the conversation and Brook proved to be his pick. He did however mention Gill during the discussion.

“I’ll throw Shubman Gill in there (with Jaiswal and Rachin) as well, but Harry Brook. Harry Brook. Harry Brook is the next one that we’re going to be talking about," Vaughan said.

“We’re already talking about him on this trip with the way that he’s played. He hasn’t got the amount of runs that I would have expected, but over the course of the next 10 years, I think we’re going to see some of the most extraordinary innings from this young chap. He’s already played many in his career so far. White-ball cricket, red-ball cricket. He’s an all-format player, and he’s box office," he added.

Jaiswal achieves success in ODIs

Meanwhile, Jaiswal will be focusing on one-day cricket at the moment as he has been picked in India's squad for the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand that will commence from January 11. The 24-year-old had recently scored his maiden ODI hundred against South Africa and thus, he has been picked for the New Zealand assignment as well.
