'One day, I want to be a captain': Yashasvi Jaiswal throws his hat in the ring for leadership role
Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal of India interact after Day 5 of the 5th Test against England at The Oval on August 04, 2025 in London, England.

Story Highlights:

Yashasvi Jaiswal has made his captaincy ambitions clear.

Jaiswal has played just one ODI so far.

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal would have been a regular in all formats if he was playing for any other country. The 23-year-old has all the shots in the book but he is yet to be a regular in the limited overs circuit. Picked in T20 World Cup 2024 squad but didn't play, late exclusion for the ICC ODI Champions Trophy 2025, Jaiswal aims to be a captain in the future.

“Currently, I am focusing a lot on my fitness. I am learning more about my body as I feel that with time, I need to be fitter and need to work more on my skills," Jaiswal said on the Raj Shamani Podcast.

“Every day I have to work on myself to evolve myself into a leader. One day, I want to be a captain."

Jaiswal picked for Australia tour

The 23-year-old has played just one ODI. He made his ODI debut against England earlier this year before the Champions Trophy 2025. Otherwise, he averages over 50 in List A cricket with five centuries and seven fifties to his name. Interestingly, he has been picked in the squad as backup opener for the Australia tour. With Shubman Gill getting the captaincy role and Rohit Sharma opening the innings alongside him, Jaiswal may not play a game on the tour.

No space for Jaiswal in T20I team

With the emergence of Abhishek Sharma, Jaiswal was not picked in T20 Asia Cup 2025 squad. He was kept as a reserve as Gill was named Suryakumar Yadav's deputy. From 23 T20Is, he has 723 runs at an average of 36.15 and strike rate of 164.31, including one century and five fifties.

Is Jaiswal on franchises’ radar for captaincy role?

While realising the captaincy dream may not be possible in the near future, the youngster may get the captaincy role in an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise. A few months earlier, there were rumours that Jaiswal may leave Rajasthan Royals (RR). Even if Jaiswal stays at RR till the next mega auction, he may be on franchises’ radar as a captaincy candidate.

Jaiswal to be in action next week

Jaiswal was recently seen in action in the first of the two-Test series against West Indies. in the opening Test, he scored 36 runs before getting dismissed. he will be seen in action again in the second Test which is scheduled to start on October 10 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
