Earlier this year, Australia's two-time ODI World Cup-winner Glenn Maxwell announced his retirement from the format. His last ODI appearance was against India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 semifinal. Months later, Maxwell is set to turn up for his state team Victoria for their first two Dean Jones Trophy (Australia’s One-Day Cup) games.
Maxwell took the decision to represent Victoria for the first time in three years ahead of the T20I series on New Zealand soil next month. He will go up against Marnus Labuschagne-led Queensland at Allan Border Field, Brisbane, on September 17. His second appearance will be against Bean Webster's Tasmania at the same venue on September 19.
Maxwell will be playing alongside his current T20I teammate Matt Short along with discarded batters Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris and others.

Maxwell's One-Day record for Victoria -
The Victoria batter has played 49 One-Day games for Victoria since his debut in 2010. He has 1,021 runs from 44 innings at an average of 25.52 and strike rate of 100.39. He has seven fifties but yet to score a century for Victoria in the format. In his 50th 50-over appearance for Victoria, Maxwell will have a chance to breach the three figures.
Why 36-year-old Maxwell retired from ODIs?
"I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how body was reacting to the conditions," Maxwell said. "I had a good chat with [Australia chair of selectors] George Bailey and I asked him what his thoughts were going forward.
"We talked about the 2027 World Cup and I said to him 'I don't think I am going to make that, it's time to start planning for people in my position to have a crack at it and make the position their own'. Hopefully they get enough of a lead-in to hang onto that role.
"I always said I wasn't going to hand my position over if I felt like I was still good enough to play. I didn't want to just hold on for a couple of series and almost play for selfish reasons.
"They are moving in such a clear direction so this give them the best look at what the line-up is leading into that next World Cup. I know how important that planning is."
Maxwell’s next T20I appearance
The T20I series against New Zealand will begin on October 1 at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui. The rest of the T20Is on October 3 and 4 will be played at the same venue.
