Rohit notched just 3 runs in the first innings on his Ranji Trophy return

Rohit Sharma looked in fine touch in Mumbai's second essay but couldn't improve much from his first innings score in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 clash against Jammu & Kashmir at the BKC Stadium in Mumbai on Friday, January 24. Rohit Sharma, who is going through a lean patch, returned to the pavilion after scoring just 28 runs in the second innings, 25 more from his first innings tally.

Rohit Sharma fails to score big on Ranji return

It was Rajasthan Royals' new recruit Yudhvir Singh, who grabbed the prized wicket of Rohit Sharma. Facing a delivery from Yudhvir Singh, the Mumbai's veteran batter mistimed a shot and was caught by Abid Mushtaq at short mid-wicket.

Earlier in his innings, the Hitman received a stroke of luck when Umar Nazir dropped a return catch off a miscued straight drive. Rohit capitalised after getting the second life, scoring 14 runs off the same over, including a powerful six.

In the following over, Rohit Sharma launched another six, this time clearing the boundary off Auqib Nabi's bowling. In total, Sharma's innings included two fours and three sixes. This was after Rohit's disappointing first innings where he scored just three runs off 19 deliveries as Mumbai were dismissed for a meager 120 runs.

After a decade-long absence, Indian captain returned to the Ranji Trophy fold following his lean patch with the bat in recent times. His batting struggles spanned through New Zealand and Australia Test series. Rohit could only muster 31 runs across three matches of Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The extent of his batting struggles was such that he had to drop himself for the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney which India ended up losing by six wickets, costing them the series and a spot in WTC final both. Consequently, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in it's 10-point policy instructed all of India's centrally contracted players to prioritize domestic cricket to improve their form.

Who is Yudhvir Singh?

Yudhvir Singh, a promising pacer from Jammu and Kashmir, kicked off his professional cricket journey in late 2019 with Hyderabad. He made his T20 and first-class debuts for the state. In 2021, he switched his allegiance to Jammu and Kashmir. Yudhvir's impressive all-around skills caught the attention of the Mumbai Indians, who signed him for the 2021 IPL season. While he didn't get a chance to play in that season, he was picked up by the Lucknow Super Giants in 2023. Yudhvir made a strong impression on his IPL debut, claiming 2/19 against the Punjab Kings. However, he only featured in five matches that season. In 2025, Yudhvir joined the Rajasthan Royals, looking to make a fresh start and establish himself as a key player in the IPL.
