Former India wicketkeeper-batter and ex-national selector, Saba Karim shed light on Jasprit Bumrah's elongated tryst with injury and how the decision to rush him back into the Indian side proved devastating in the past. In a recent update released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), there were ominous updates regarding Bumrah's progress in rehabilitation as the right-arm pacer is scheduled to play practice matches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

"The two fast bowlers are in the final stages of their rehab and are bowling with full intensity in the nets. The duo will now play some practice games, which the NCA will organise. The BCCI Medical Team is pleased with their progress and will make a final decision after assessing them following the practice games," the BCCI said in the release.

Bumrah, who underwent back surgery earlier in the year, is believed to be recovering well and has been bowling regularly a few overs in the NCA nets. Bumrah hasn't complained of any significant pain during his rehab process. There have been reports that Bumrah might make a comeback to the Indian side when the senior team travels to Ireland for a three-match T20I series.

Amidst all the reports of Bumrah's comeback, Karim voiced his concerns and reflected on the time when Bumrah was rushed back into the Indian squad which ultimately led to the pacer reaggravating his injury.

"Whatever transpired in the past, there was some lack of communication either between the selectors or demands of the team management. Maybe that was one reason why Bumrah was rushed back too quickly." Karim told Jio Cinema.

Pestered by the recurring back injury, Bumrah has been sidelined for almost a year which has cost India big time in the mega events including the recent WTC final. Bumrah's absence has hurt India not just in the WTC final but also in last year's Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. Thus, the BCCI doesn't want to take any more chances with Bumrah as they want the senior pacer to be available for selection in India's World Cup squad.

Karim also believes that the BCCI and the selectors should take a decision regarding Bumrah's comeback with great caution, especially with the ODI World Cup around the corner.

"This time around, keeping the World Cup in mind, not only the BCCI, but also the selectors and NCA support staff have to be extremely cautious. That is why even though he is match fit; they want him to play some of these NCA practice matches," said Karim.
