India's young batter Shubman Gill who is currently leading Punjab in second led of the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 sinked his state team to a 46-year low on January 23 against Karnataka. Gill who was playing Ranji Trophy after 2022 failed to make any impact with the bat as he was cheaply dismissed after scoring just four runs in eight balls at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
After being asked to bat, the Gill-led side failed to get a good start as Karnataka's Abhilash Shetty got the first breakthrough for Karnataka picking India's star batter Shubman Gill's wicket on the first session of day 1 during the ourth over. After Gill's wicket, Karnataka pacer V Koushik's two wickets in a single over changed the momentum of the game. After losing two wickets in a single over, the wicketkeeper batter who was trying to get comfortable with the pitch got out after giving a dolly to Aneesh KV in the next over. Punjab's Ramandeep Singh was the highest run-getter scoring 16 off 35 and apart from Ramandeep, Mayank Markande was the only batter who scored in double digits.
Karnataka's V Koushik was the pick of the bowlers with four scalps, Abhilash Shetty picked three, and Prasidh Krishna and Yashovardhan Parantap got two and one wickets each.
Punjab's new low in Ranji Trophy 2025
After a flop show in batting, Gill-led Punjab bundled out on just 55 runs which is Punjab's second-lowest total ever in Ranji Trophy history and their lowest in 46 years. The 55-all-out is the lowest total in the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25. Punjab's lowest-ever Ranji total is 42 all-out which came against Haryana in 1978. The Shubman Gill-led side comes second in the tally after flop show with bat and the third lowest total of Punjab in Ranji Trophy history came against Mumbai in 2012 where they got all-out on just 59 runs.

Before Ranji Trophy 2025, the India batter was in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 where he missed the first Test match after getting injured during the team's practice sessions at WACA in Perth. The young batter came into India's playing XI for the second Test match which was a Day/Night pink ball Test in Adelaide he scored 59 runs in two innings where Australia defeated India by 10 wickets to level the series 1-1. Gill who was looking confident in the second Test match got out after scoring one run in the third Test match which ended as a draw. After the third Test, the batter was benched by the team. Despite, India's changes in the playing XI Pat Cummins-led side defeated India to take 2-1 lead. He also featured in the last (fifth) Test match in Sydney. The 25-year-old batter ended the five Test match series scoring 93 runs in three Test (5 Innings) outings.
After the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Gill has been appointed Rohit Sharma's deputy in ODIs for the three-match ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy 2025 which is scheduled to start from February 19.
